Social anxiety disorder is F40.10. The reason it is hard to find is naming: ICD-10-CM still files this family under the older term social phobia, and lists “social anxiety disorder” as an inclusion term rather than as the heading. Searching the code set for the DSM name returns nothing at the category level. F40.1 on its own is not billable — it needs the fifth character. Below: the two codes, the naming mismatch and the CPT pairings.

Only two options carry a fifth character, so the choice is narrow: F40.11 when the documentation establishes that the fear generalizes across most social situations, and F40.10 otherwise. Unlike the depression and bipolar families, there is no severity axis here.
ICD-10-CM lists four inclusion terms under F40.1, and the DSM name is one of them:
An inclusion term is not a separate code. All four land on F40.10 or F40.11. Worth knowing because a search of the tabular list for “social anxiety” finds the heading “social phobias” and can look like a miss when it is not.
Note the second one: social anxiety disorder of childhood is not a separate code. There is no paediatric variant to move to, and a child with social anxiety codes to the same F40.10 or F40.11 as an adult.
Two neighbours are easy to reach for by mistake. Agoraphobia is F40.0-, a different fourth character entirely, and specific (isolated) phobias are F40.2-. A fear confined to one object or situation is F40.2-, not social phobia, even where the avoidance is severe.
The specific phobia codes are more granular than most people expect — ICD-10-CM names individual fears rather than leaving them to an unspecified code. A selection:

Note the pattern: the F40.2 subcategories themselves — F40.21, F40.22, F40.23, F40.24, F40.29 — are not billable. Each needs a sixth character. A claim for a specific phobia carries a six-character code or it is rejected.
DSM-5-TR prints F40.10 beside social anxiety disorder. DSM-5 renamed the DSM-IV diagnosis “social phobia” to “social anxiety disorder” and kept the older name as a parenthetical; ICD-10-CM did the reverse, keeping “social phobia” as the heading. Same condition, opposite naming conventions.
DSM-5 also replaced DSM-IV's “generalized” specifier with a performance-only specifier, which inverts what is marked. ICD-10-CM did not follow and still codes the generalized form at F40.11. A clinician assessing against DSM-5 therefore has a performance-only finding or no specifier at all, and no generalized finding to support F40.11 — which is why F40.10 is usually the accurate code rather than a default.

A 50-minute session is 90834, not 90837 — 90837 begins at 53 minutes. CMS also sets a floor: psychotherapy under 16 minutes is not reported with these codes at all.
