What Afia does
Afia is a free ICD-10 and CPT assistant for mental and behavioral health. Ask it by voice or chat — no sign-up. It is billing and administrative reference: it tells you what a code means and whether it can be submitted, and does not give clinical advice.
F41.1 — generalized anxiety disorderBillable status, the F41 family, the CPT codes it pairs with, and the DSM-5 crosswalk.
F32 & F33 — major depressive disorderSingle episode versus recurrent, why neither category code is billable, and the F32.A trap.
F90 — ADHDInattentive, hyperactive or combined — plus the 96127 testing code practices forget to bill.
F43.10 — PTSDWhy F43.1 alone is rejected, and why DSM-5 users nearly always code unspecified.
Insomnia — F51.0 vs G47.0Two chapters, and the choice can decide which benefit is asked to pay.
F31 — bipolar disorderThe code encodes the current episode, so it changes between visits.
F84.0 — autismWhy ICD-10 still has an Asperger’s code that DSM-5 abolished, and the testing codes.
F42 — OCDThere is no F42.0 and no F42.1 — the family starts at F42.2. Hoarding and skin-picking have their own codes.
F41.0 — panic disorderWith agoraphobia it becomes F40.01, and the two are never coded together.
F40.10 — social anxietyFiled under the older name “social phobia”, which is why searching the DSM name finds nothing.
F50 — eating disordersSeverity is inside the code: anorexia by BMI band, bulimia and binge eating by episodes per week.
F53.0 — postpartum depressionAnd why postpartum dysphoria is O90.6, in the obstetric chapter entirely.
F34.1 — persistent depressiveICD-10 still titles it “dysthymic disorder”, and it is not an F32 code.
F41.9 — anxiety, unspecifiedBillable, and the most over-used code in behavioral health. When to move off it.
F41.8 — depression with anxietyMixed anxiety and depressive disorder — and why it is not F41.3.
F60.3 — borderline personalityAlso emotionally unstable personality disorder. No severity character anywhere in F60.
F10–F19 — substance useOne pattern behind every substance code, and the Excludes1 that causes most denials.
Z63.0 — relationship distressBillable and covered are different questions. Why clean Z-code claims still get denied.
F10 — alcohol use disorderDSM-5 mild maps to F10.10, moderate and severe both to F10.20. The crosswalk people reverse.
F43.2 — adjustment disorderNeeds a fifth character, and draws more medical-necessity scrutiny than almost any other diagnosis.

Everything Afia can answer
- Find a diagnosis code — name a condition, get the ICD-10 code. “The code for generalized anxiety disorder” returns F41.1.
- Check whether a code is billable — including the unspecified-versus-specified trap that quietly understates what was assessed.
- Validate a whole list at once — paste or upload many ICD-10 codes and check them in one pass.
- Match a CPT code to a session length — whether 90834 or 90837 fits. 90837 starts at 53 minutes, not 50.
- Check insurance eligibility — whether a plan covers mental health services.
The public assistant uses test data only. ICD-10-CM codes are revised annually, effective 1 October — verify against the current official code set before submitting.
